Every day, your people demonstrate capabilities in their personal lives that could add significant value to your organisation—but your organisation may never benefit from them.
Before arriving at work they solve problems, make decisions, negotiate, adapt, prioritise and deal with unexpected situations in their personal lives—without any supervision!
Then they arrive at work, bringing those same capabilities with them. Yet many of those capabilities remain untapped.
Not because the capability isn't there, but because the environment doesn’t ask for them – it asks only for compliance.
The result is what I have come to think of as The Productivity Illusion - An organisation can appear highly productive because it is highly compliant.
Processes are followed. Reports are completed. KPIs are achieved. Standards are maintained.
Yet hidden beneath that operational discipline may be an enormous reserve of untapped contribution. Contribution that the organisation never thought to ask for.
Not because compliance is unimportant. Quite the opposite - compliance is essential:
It protects quality. It protects safety. It creates consistency.
Everything appears to be working.
But compliance should be the springboard to productivity, not the measure of it.
So if compliance is not productivity... how much untapped contribution is your organisation leaving on the table?
If these thoughts have caused you to see productivity differently, I'd like to hear your thoughts.
